Hattie’s Blog

Hungry Hippo 3/20/13

Melissa

Dr. Alexander examined Hattie today. His exams are just as thorough as they were two months ago. I appreciate his integrity and willingness to answer all of my questions everyday. Hattie's feeds increased to 48 cc. Dr. A assured me we should not be concerned about the hearing test. He said she could've had fluid in her right ear, the probe could have been poorly positioned and oftentimes the machines in her room can interfere with the audiologist's equipment. Dr. A said Hattie has great control of her head and he can tell her neck muscles are becoming very strong. He called Hattie perfect and I was beaming. Hattie didn't wake up for her two feeds overnight but she ate her whole bottle at 7:30 a.m. When I arrived she was sleeping and slept right through her 10:30 a.m. feed. I breastfed at 1:30 p.m. and she ate 12 cc. We kangarooed this afternoon. Hattie was sound asleep and suddenly stretched her whole body out straight and let out a little shriek. I'm not too sure what was going on, but she kept punching me in the throat with her fist.

Chris brought leftover 4Rivers from an event at work and we had a picnic together in the hospital cafeteria, complete with sweet tea in mason jars. How exciting a romantic dinner in the hospital cafeteria can be!

Hattie had immunization number three tonight. Luckily her cries don't last very long and she seems to focus on being hungry rather than hurt.

Hattie ate all but 7 cc from her 7:30 p.m. bottle. I went to small group while Chris stayed at the hospital with our sweet baby. Chris held Hattie while she received the rest of her feed through her tube. She fell so hard asleep that he and Maria decided to let Hattie rest in her bed rather than kangaroo.

Hattie was a hungry, hungry hippo when I returned from small group. She woke herself up at 10:15 p.m. and ate her entire bottle for me in less than ten minutes. Maria gave her ten more cc of milk and she gobbled that up too. She would've eaten more but we figured almost two ounces in one feeding was enough for now. I snuggled with her until she fell asleep.

Our baby hippo keeps gaining weight and now weighs 2,453 grams, or 5 pounds, 6.5 ounces. We are so happy!
