Hattie’s Blog

Double or Nothing 2/17/13

Chris

Our little girl turned six weeks old today! It is hard to believe that it was just six weeks ago that our lives so drastically changed. That was the moment that we truly began to understand what a parent's love is and how all of the other stuff in life—work, laundry, the DVR—just doesn't matter as much anymore. As we reflect over the past six weeks, sometimes it is hard to believe how short Hattie's little life has been up to this point. At other times, it feels like it has been longer than six weeks and it is hard to remember a time when we didn't spend our days and late nights in the NICU. But one thing is for certain: we wouldn't have it any other way. Hattie is our little gift from God and we are so thankful to be a part of her life.

Hattie hit another milestone today. She has doubled her birth weight! She now weighs 1665 grams or 3 lb., 10.7 oz. Hattie also grew longer and measures 15.35 in.

We spent a little time looking back at photos of Hattie from her first couple of weeks and she looks so different now. Her face is filled out with chubby cheeks, and every day we seem to find a new fat roll somewhere (mind you, this is the only time in her life that we can talk about her fat rolls!).

Hattie got a new feeding tube today. She had it replaced yesterday too. No matter what, Hattie always figures out a way to mess with her tape enough that it comes loose. This was the first time I saw the nurse insert the tube through her nose. She warned us that Hattie doesn't like it and she was right. But our nurse Kristi did a great job of comforting Hattie and it wasn't too bad. Kristi reinforced the tape the best she could so hopefully this one will stay in for a while.

I kangarooed Hattie today after she nuzzled with Melissa. Normally she takes 20 minutes or so to get comfortable when we start to kangaroo. Not after nuzzling! It was so neat to see how it wore her out and how fast she went right to sleep.

Tonight Melissa held Hattie in her swaddle rather than kangarooing so we could leave a little earlier than normal and go to Target before they closed. The scene was precious. Hattie had her paci in her mouth and spent most of the time staring back up at her mommy. I just couldn't get enough of my two girls being so cute and enjoying their time together.

A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. –John 16:21
